My name is Ifrah Abib and I’m a primary school teacher, who works in a local primary school. I’m a volunteer at Aqoon. I’ve been volunteering at Aqoon for the past 10 years.
Initially, I heard of Aqoon from the community and they have helped me kick-start my career working in education. I did not know where to start and needed some experience working in schools and this is when Mr Tarah arranged some volunteer work for me at Taylor road school. I read to the children there and listened to them read too for a few hours a week. After that, he informed me of a learning support assistant vacancy at Shenton primary, which I applied for and worked at for 2 years. This enabled me to gain more experience. During that time, I also volunteered for Aqoon at the Coleman primary school complementary classes every Saturday. The following year, I started the PGCE primary at Leicester University and became a qualified teacher. I continued to volunteer at the Coleman primary complementary classes but this time I was teaching the year 6 children to prepare for their SATs. Recently, I’ve volunteered teaching the year 5 Saturday complementary classes and I’ve also started training other volunteers at Aqoon.
